What Is the Language Test?

The language test is the practice and study of assessing the candidates’ competencies in using a particular language effectively.

The purpose of the language tests is to determine the candidates’ language knowledge, abilities, and to distinguish those candidates from others. In this context, language proficiency tests refer to the tool of collecting information and making judgments about the candidates’ knowledge of a language and their abilities to use it.

What Are the Advantages of Language Tests?

Language proficiency testing helps to recruit people who can communicate effectively in the language you are testing. As language proficiency is so relative among people, objective language proficiency tests in human resources processes are necessary. The person you are going to test might understand the language very well but might not speak well or s/he might speak fluently but might have insufficient grammar knowledge. In this way, you can measure the candidate's language proficiency in the subjects you need.

Why Use Language Test in Assessment Processes?

Recruiters can assess the candidates' current level of language abilities in order to find out if they are suitable for a position. It is important that the language proficiency of the candidate you are planning to recruit is at the level you expect because language competence is often relative.

A language proficiency that seems to be sufficient for the candidate may be below the company's expectations. Therefore, it is necessary to act on concrete data by assessing the candidate, not just with interview notes.

Grammar

Listening

Listening is the ability to understand spoken language. Recruiters can test how well the candidates are at understanding complex topics or terminologies depending on the required level of proficiency. Talentate Language Tests also contain hundreds of listening questions under each difficulty level from beginner to proficiency level like all other dimensions.

Vocabulary

Vocabulary is important as it forms the base of a language. They are raw building blocks that can be used to express thoughts and ideas, share information, understand others, and develop personal relationships. With this dimension, candidates' mastery of using the words and richness of vocabulary is measured.

Reading

Questions of the dimension require understanding written text, which can be complex and difficult. Especially for high-level positions, it’s essential to be able to understand written text, such as e-mails, contracts, and articles.

FAQ

What are the different levels of language proficiency?

In the Talentate Language Tests, candidates are graded according to CEFR criteria. The CEFR framework consists of six levels of competence: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2. This goes from A1, beginner to C2 proficiency level. A1 indicates that the candidate's language proficiency is at a basic level. The C2 level indicates that a candidate can understand and be involved in complex social and business interactions.

What kind of precautions do you have in case the candidate tries to cheat?

The recruiter can optionally set the test as mandatory for candidates to keep the camera on during the test. The camera captures the image of the candidate at random time intervals during the test, through the algorithm created by the Talentate. The algorithm detects if the candidate acts suspiciously during the test. Accordingly, it is considered suspicious if a second person appears on the screen during the test, or if the candidate turns off the camera. While the recruiter screens the test results of the candidates, the candidates who are found suspicious by the algorithm will display the results marked in red.

Which occupational groups and levels are Talentate Language Tests especially targets?
